The Muktinath Temple is a sacred sanctuary of profound spiritual liberation and religious unity, nestled at a majestic altitude of 3,800 meters at the foot of the Thorong La mountain pass in Mustang, Nepal. Revered by Hindus as Mukti Kshetra (the place of salvation) and by Buddhists as Chumig Gyatsa (Hundred Waters), this ancient site stands as a powerful symbol of harmony between the two faiths. For Hindus, it is consecrated as the only Divya Desam—one of the 108 most sacred earthly abodes of Lord Vishnu—located outside India, where devotees seek moksha, the ultimate liberation from the cycle of rebirth. Buddhists venerate the site as a sacred ground blessed by the meditation of the ancient sage Guru Rinpoche. The main three-tier pagoda-style temple houses a life-sized golden statue of Lord Vishnu, surrounded by breathtaking, rugged Himalayan landscapes. Immediately behind the temple, an outer courtyard features 108 semicircular water spouts sculpted as bull heads, from which icy mountain water continuously flows. Pilgrims brave the freezing temperatures to take ritual baths under each spout, believing the sacred water purifies the soul and washes away past sins. Just a short walk away lies the Jwalamai Temple, where a miraculous eternal blue flame burns directly above water, fueled by natural gas. The surrounding Kali Gandaki riverbed further elevates the temple's sanctity, as it is the exclusive source of Saligrams, prehistoric ammonite fossils worshiped as direct manifestations of Lord Vishnu, making Muktinath a legendary beacon of faith.
